Basic walkthrough for the Soil Model Wizard

The basic idea of a wizard is to help a user through a specific (more or less) complex situation by breaking it up in several steps. This way the user is taken step-by-step through the entire process. Each step confronts the user with only a part of the issue, preventing the user to be overwhelmed by the amount of information/questions.

The Soil Model Wizard consists of five steps: Soil Types, Soil Profiles, Locations, Settings and Advanced Calculation options. Each step has its own subtopic.

Prerequisites and Results

The Soil Model Wizard uses the pipeline configuration from the PLE project as input. The pipeline configuration comprises (some of) the result tables of Design Function 2 and Design Function 3.1. So in order to run the Soil Model Wizard, Design Functions 2 and 3.1 must be calculated.

Warning The Wizard only uses IDENTS for localisation. Having parameter changes, such as (step) changes in G-LEVEL, W-LEVEL, diameter and more at positions without an ident assigned, the soil wizard will not correctly recognise these changes.

The Soil Model Wizard uses the following result tables:

Nodes [NODES]

Elements of pipeline [ELEMNTS]

Vertical profile data [PROFILE] (Input table [G-LEVEL] is required)

Identification names [IDENTS]

Pipe dimension data [PIPEDIM]

Pipe material data [PIPEMAT]

After a successful run of the Soil Model Wizard (some of the) input tables of Design Functions 3.2 and 6.1 will be filled and tested. The following 'input' tables will be filled:

Horizontal soil stiffness [KLH]

Downward vertical soil stiffness [KLS]

Upward vertical soil stiffness [KLT] (is only filled when using the NEN 3650-1:2020 (or 2017) calculation methodology, see Properties of settings)

Pipe-soil friction [F]

Displacement at maximum soil friction [UF]

Sub-soil bearing capacity [RVS]

Ultimate top soil reaction [RVT]

Ultimate horizontal soil reaction [RH]

Uncertainty factors [UNCER]

Neutral/Real top soil load [SOILNB] from Design Function 6.1

Besides the above mentioned input tables the Soil Model Wizard also generates five so called 'Wizard tables'. These non-editable wizard tables provide information on values and settings used in the Soil Model Wizard and are added to Design Function 3.2. This way the tables can, for example, be used as additional report information. The following wizard tables are generated:

Soil layers [SLAYER]

Soil profiles [SPROF]

Soil profile layers [SPRLAY]

Soil profile locations [SLOC]

General soil settings [SSET]
